David Bowie’s Woodstock Haven: A Sanctuary of Music & Memory
“I wanted to prove the sustaining power of music.” - David Bowie
David Bowie and his wife, fashion model and muse Iman, slipped into Woodstock at the turn of the millennium, in 2000, seeking a quiet landing after years of living in the spotlight of New York City. Their 64-acre retreat on Little Tonshi Mountain offered a sanctuary where the noise of fame faded into the Catskill’s silence. Here, on the mountain, Bowie found the space to create his final masterpiece, "Blackstar," a record that echoed the solitude and introspection of his woodland haven.
The house was more than a residence; it was a vessel for their shared life. In 2016, after Bowie's passing, Iman honored his wish for privacy by scattering his ashes at this secluded spot. Despite his global fame, Bowie lived a life of quiet dignity in Woodstock, blending into the community while maintaining a low profile.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Iman returned to the home, finding solace in the memories they had built together. The enforced isolation became a period of reflection and healing, transforming the house into a space where grief could be processed and love remembered. Today, the home stands as a testament to Bowie's legacy and the enduring bond they shared.
About Bowie’s Wing
This is a charming, junior one-bedroom cottage located in its own wing, on the West side of The Main House. It has beautiful vaulted ceilings and two private entrances: one in the front, right off of Tinker Street with a classic rocking porch, and one in the back, with its own bluestone patio and views of the stream and The Back Forty.
Inside the bungalow, the living and work area face south and gets great light throughout the day. The bungalow has a fully-equipped and well-stocked kitchen with a breakfast bar, a separate junior bedroom with a full-sized bed, and a bathroom with a shower. Bowie’s Wing is great for guests looking for a place to incubate or focus on creative projects, but that still wish to have easy access to walk to all the amenities and cultural attractions nearby in the Village. This unit is suited for 1-2 people.
